Lockdown Is Easing. Gigs To Return!

It's been a tough journey...

As with many of my musician friends, the coronavirus lockdown has resulted in the longest gig free period since I was a pre-teen. As the lockdown eases and at the time of writing, pubs and venues will be opening soon, weddings will be allowed with restrictions and the possibility of playing live once again draws closer.

If you are getting married or would like live music at your venue, it will be a while before things return to normal. Singing is not allowed, social distancing needs to be implemented and loud music that causes people to raise their voices is taboo. There is however an answer...

Solo, acoustic guitar!

Yes, solo acoustic guitar is possible!

Ready To Perform!

  • All instrumental, so no singing.
  • Background music, so excessive volume is not a problem.
  • It is only me, so I am socially distanced.
  • I can play outdoors and people are encouraged to be outside.
  • When the number of people is restricted, I only take up one space.

Weddings And Events

If you would like to have live music at your wedding or venue once again, I have a pop up gazebo which keeps me self contained outside in case it rains. I have always tried to include as many styles as possible when performing solo acoustic guitar gigs, so there will be something to suit everybody's musical tastes.

Ceremony Only?

If you are having a wedding ceremony only and not a reception, I can perform whilst your guests arrive, during the ceremony and afterwards so that you and your guests can still enjoy live music on your special day.

Set The Mood...

From July 4th, small weddings and civil partnership ceremonies will be possible if strict guidelines are followed. Not only singing, but even speaking loudly is forbidden due to the transfer of respiratory droplets though the air. A virtually silent wedding will certainly lack atmosphere, but the mood can still be set with the addition of solo acoustic guitar.

Lockdown Videos

Although I have not played any gigs since the beginning of the lockdown, I have kept myself busy teaching online and recording various videos. I have posted my videos on various platforms, so I thought it would be good to have them all in one place, so here are my lockdown videos so far:
As you can see, I have uploaded a variety of videos - solo guitar, duo, original material and with the Claire Barker Band. These videos were uploaded to various platforms, on which you will find much more content.

Teaching Guitar Online

Online guitar teaching has worked much better than I could have possibly imagined. I spent a great deal of time working out how I could use all of the resources in my studio to deliver the best possible experience for my students.

I now have a suite of professional software and specialist equipment that works extremely well when teaching online and the feedback from my students has been very encouraging.

Paul is an outstanding guitar teacher. I take my lessons online as I'm based overseas. They are very well structured and tailored to musical taste and playing ability. Enjoying lots and can't recommend him highly enough.

Paul is a great tutor unlocking doors that I never thought I would get through, the online lessons also work far better than I could have thought. Highly recommend!

Guitar Courses Coming Soon!

I recently closed my guitar subscription site to new users as I have outgrown the current platform and I will soon be launching a series of online guitar courses. Existing users are still able to access my book, supporting videos and all other material.

First came the printed book, then digital (available to purchase in iBooks), followed by my subscription site. I am very excited about launching the next stage in my book's journey!

    Coronavirus Update

    Solo Acoustic Guitar Videos

As with most of my talented musician friends, I am desperately missing playing live. I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to record a selection of solo acoustic guitar videos and upload them to my Facebook page.

    Videos Posted To Facebook:

I have also created a playlist that will contain these, and future video uploads. If you use Facebook, please feel free to like my page so that you can be notified of any updates.

    Online Guitar Tuition

Due to the lockdown, I am now teaching all of my guitar students online. I have taught students online many times before, so this is not new to me. I have, however, switched to using Zoom rather than Skype as the platform has many great features that are beneficial to teaching online.

My big project last Summer was to hardwire my studio to the internet, specifically for teaching online. I am so glad that I did this!

If you are interested in taking online guitar lessons, I have a web page on my teaching website that tells you most things that you will need to know.

    Claire Barker Band Isolation Video

The Claire Barker Band recently recorded a song with each of us recording our parts separately in our homes. Andy Cooper (keys) did an amazing job in putting together the final video. It is amazing what can be achieved with technology nowadays!

I look forward to the time when we can all play together once again. Until then, look out for more tracks coming soon.

    Cancelled Weddings

So many events have been cancelled due to coronavirus and having a wedding cancelled is heartbreaking for all those involved. Many of my gigs are weddings and I feel so sorry for those who have had their special day cancelled.

Health is obviously the primary concern in these strange times, so I'm sure all the weddings will be even more magical once we all get through this global crisis.

Stay healthy and well everyone and I will see you on the other side!

    Happy New Year!

I hope you enjoyed a great Christmas and Santa was kind for your good behaviour throughout 2019. I am looking forward to another year of gigs and the diary is getting pretty full already.

    A Busy December

It was great to have a break between Christmas and New Year's Eve, although the lead up to Christmas was busier than ever.

Gigs included the Joe Ringer Christmas Spectacular at Norwich Playhouse and the Pavilion Theatre, duo gigs on my acoustic guitar with Claire Barker, other Christmas themed gigs in various venues and another fantastic set of gigs at the Mercure Hotel with the Claire Barker Band.

We all had a great time playing all the Christmas parties and on New Year's Eve at the Mercure Hotel. The dance floor was full every night and everyone was certainly in a festive mood.

If you missed the fun at the Mercure Hotel this year, the great news is that we will be back there again next December to make more memorable Christmas parties.

    Did You Get Engaged?

Was there a marriage proposal over the Christmas holidays? Christmas and New Year's Eve are very popular times for people to pop the question.

Music is a huge part of any wedding day and can really make the day extra special. In planning a wedding, the evening is usually the main consideration when it comes to music, but there are so many other options:

    • Guests arrival at the church
    • Walking down the aisle - guitar is a great alternative to an organ
    • Signing of the register
    • Exit music
    • Drinks reception
    • During photos - whilst individual guests are taken away for photos, music can entertain other guests
    • Background music during the Wedding Breakfast
    • A band in the evening to dance the night away!

If you need advice when choosing music, please get in touch and I can put together the perfect package, or just give you some ideas.

    Public Gigs

Many of the gigs I play are weddings or private functions, although I often play public gigs which I list on my public gigs page.

If you want to came and join the fun with the Claire Barker Band, enjoy relaxing acoustic songs with my duo with Claire or as a solo guitarist, or you fancy an evening of jazz, hopefully I will see you at a gig sometime soon.

    Site hack update

If you have visited this website recently, you may have been presented with either a forbidden page or worst case scenario, you may have been redirected to other websites.

Unfortunately, this website had been infected with malicious code. I spent countless hours trying to save the site, although the site was so riddled with code that my only option was to delete the site and recreate it.

The site is back online now, although there are probably areas that I have missed, so apologies for any missing content!

    New YouTube Videos

I have recently uploaded some new videos to YouTube, demonstrating songs that I perform when playing solo, acoustic guitar gigs. More content will be uploaded soon, although I am still catching up after the hacking situation.

My good friend and fellow band mate from the Claire Barker Band - Josie Tate - did a great job of filming the videos. Josie is an awesome photographer and is highly recommended for many styles of photography.

    Sundays At The Brickmakers

If you fancy a fun Sunday afternoon, I will be performing at the Brickmakers in Sprowston on occasional Sundays, the first date being Sunday 13th October, 3pm - 6pm.

The Brickmakers gigs will be great fun as we will be playing some different material which would not necessarily be suitable for other types of gig.

Come on down and enjoy the fun!

    That's all for now!

This post is mainly just a quick update to apologise for the site being down. It has been a very time consuming process in trying to overcome this problem, but now I can get back to my guitars.

Hopefully see you at a gig soon!

Paul Hill And Jasper Smith – The Reunion

    Happy New Year!

I hope you had a nice Christmas. It has been a while since I last posted on here. 2018 was certainly a busy year for me and Christmas was a welcome break with time to reflect on the previous year and to make plans for the year ahead.

One gig I am very much looking forward to is a duo gig with my good friend and fellow guitarist - Jasper Smith. Jasper and I used to play together very regularly, although our last performance was around six years ago as Jasper has been living in Australia since then.

When Jasper told me that he would be visiting the UK for a few weeks, we both agreed that it would be a great idea to play together once again and I have organised a one off gig.

    Paul Hill and Jasper Smith

    Gig Details

We will be performing at the Cellar House on the 13th January, starting at 5.00pm. Booking a table to eat is recommended.

    A Busy December

December 2018 was once again full of gigs. I had a great time playing with the Claire Barker Band every Friday and Saturday in the lead up to Christmas at the Mercure Hotel.

The band performed at all of the Hotel's Christmas parties, the after Christmas party and on New Year's Eve. It is always a pleasure working for the Mercure Hotel as they treat us well and there is always a great party atmosphere.

The 2019 diary is filling up fast for the Claire Barker Band, so if you are looking for the ultimate party band for your wedding or other event, be sure to book soon!

    The Claire Barker Band

    Mixing It Up

As with the rest of the the year, December also brought many other types of gig including solo acoustic guitar gigs, jazz gigs and the Joe Ringer Christmas Spectacular show at the Norwich Playhouse. One of the many great things about the guitar is its diversity and I really enjoy playing in such varied musical settings.

Many of the gigs I play tend to be private functions, although there are a few public gigs over the next few weeks:

Friday, 11th January - The Claire Barker Band at the Brickmakers
Sunday, 13th January - Paul Hill and Jasper Smith at the Cellar House
Sunday, 3rd February - The Paul Hill Jazz Trio at Milestones, Lowestoft

I try to keep the Public Gigs section of this site up to date. Details of gigs and other events can also be found on my Facebook page. Hopefully I will see you at a gig soon!

    Demo Videos On YouTube

It has been a while since I posted on this website due to a ridiculously busy year, so the latest news is well overdue!

Claire Barker and Paul Hill on YouTube

I have played many gigs with Claire since we decided to join forces as an acoustic guitar and vocal duo. This year has been a healthy mix of weddings and public venues which allows us to perform a vast range of material. I always enjoy performing with Claire as she is an amazing singer and her versatility allows us to play any style whether it be laid back jazz and soul to classic rock and modern pop.

On a rare night off from performing, we decided to use our time wisely and record a few demo videos for YouTube. The tracks chosen were from our more modern repertoire. It was great fun recording these videos and here are the results:

We will be recording more videos when we have time so please subscribe to my YouTube channel and you won’t miss the next instalment.

If you want to come to a gig and hear us perform, our next public gigs are:

10th May – The Wine Cellar
    19th May – The Brickmakers

If you can’t make either of these dates, we advertise our public gigs on our Facebook page so come along and enjoy the fun!

    Guitar Theory and Technique Website

Alongside performing and teaching guitar, I have also been working hard on my Guitar Theory and Technique website. If you are visiting this site looking for wedding music and you play the guitar, you might want to check out my subscription site. I am very excited by this new project as it is something that I have been wanting to put together for many years. There is also free content that I will be adding regularly.

The Guild of Professional Wedding Services

In 2015, I became heavily involved with the Guild and the past year has seen us go from strength to strength. The Guild of Professional Wedding Services has been running since 1995 and is the perfect place to go if you are planning your wedding. All members run a well established, professional wedding services business in the Norfolk area. Only individual, established, local businesses are accepted into the Guild and membership is by invitation only.

The Guild exhibits at many of the biggest wedding shows in the area so if you are visiting a show at which we are exhibiting, make a point of visiting our stand and talking to a Guild member. He or she will have plenty of helpful advice and will give you great ideas for your wedding day.

See you at a gig soon!

That is just about all for this blog. If you are getting married soon, I wish you all the best for your special day. If you are looking for a break from all the wedding planning, nothing beats relaxing with a drink and listening to live music so I hope to see you at a gig soon!

    New Duo Website

The Claire Barker and Paul Hill Duo

Claire and I are performing together so regularly in our acoustic duo, so we decided it was time we needed a website of our own.

    Visit claireandpaulduo.co.uk

    An Exciting Journey

Claire and I have come a long way since first performing together in our duo. I had been playing in the Claire Barker Band for a while and had developed a very close musical relationship with Claire and the rest of the band. We were offered to play a gig as a duo and didn’t really know what to expect. We soon found out that we are perfectly matched in a duo situation and Claire’s incredible vocal talents makes every gig musically fulfilling. We are also great friends and our enjoyment in performing together really comes out in every performance.

Since that first gig, we have played together many times, have accumulated a massive repertoire of songs and have also optimised our equipment so that we can sound at our best at every performance. This week has been an exciting (and expensive) equipment purchasing week. Although further tweaking will take place, we now have the perfect setup to sound great in any venue.

Beautiful and eclectic music for your event.

See us live! To find out where we are playing next, follow us on Facebook.

See you at a gig soon!

We have many gigs coming up and are both looking forward to continuing our exciting journey to see where it takes us. Most of our duo gigs coming up are private functions and weddings so If you want to catch us live, please like our Facebook page to be notified of public gigs.

We look forward to seeing you at a gig soon!
